Tambo Valley GC

The course is situated in a small valley off the Great Alpine Road. Situated between Swift’s Creek & Omeo it is a hidden gem in the high country and is widely regarded as one of the best 9 holes golf courses in Victoria. (Follow the signs from the Bindi Road turnoff) Maintained by voluntary labour, the 9 hole course (with alternate tees on most) is made up of three par 3s, three par 4s and three par 5s.

While not an overly long course at 5617 metres, its is a par 72 with an ACR of 70, testament to the tight fairways and the need to place the ball in the right position to be able to attack the pin.  The greens are small but true with bunkers ready to trap the wayward shot.

Junction Creek flows through the course and comes into play on several holes – Known widely as ‘Little Augusta’ because of the towering pines trees, Tambo has its own version of Amen corner with bogies on the 5th -6th & 7th holes more than acceptable for any golfer.

The seclusion of the course is its beauty – Many times you feel you are the only person within miles even though others are also enjoying the course.  An early morning or evening round may see you sharing the course with kangaroos & deer as they seek the green grass of the fairways.

The clubhouse is the former farmhouse of the dairy farm that once occupied the land and is a comfortable rest stop for those playing or staying at the course.

Clean amenities are available for the visitor and there are showers, toilets, and BBQ facilities available for use at no charge. The is a fully licensed bar open on competition days and visitors are more than welcome.

The Tambo Valley Golf Club was constructed in 1969 and was formed with the closure of the two Swift’s Creek Golf Clubs – Tall Timbers at Bindi and Swift’s Creek G.C at Negoura. Both of these clubs were constructed on farming properties.

The vision of two men, Les Skelton & Bob Blackwood, sourced property on the Nuninong Road that had been converted into a pine plantation by the then Ezards Timber Mill. Bob & Les climbed a nearby hill and designed the layout of the course.

Countless working bees were held as the course was carved from the plantation. Bob Blackwood (who was responsible for Yarram Golf Clubs converting from scrapes to greens) constructed the greens and the current 9 hole course took shape. The first competition was held in 1970 and several years later the Ensay Golf Club folded and its members joined Tambo Valley.
